Get a Job
By Hal Sirowitz
Your eyes are red, Mother said.
You've been probably taking drugs again.
The next time that you do, you should
give me some. I could use sleeping pills.
I've been having trouble sleeping, worrying
about you. You're the only one in your class
not working this summer. When I meet
the mothers of your friends they ask me
what you do, & when I say
you've been reading, they wonder why
you can't do it at night after working
during the day. You're not satisfied
just being a bum, but have to sit
in your room all day studying how to be a better one.
